Are you curious about editing TikTok videos? Well, I’ll be sharing a simple tutorial on how to edit TikTok videos in my video editing software. The reason I decided to write a blog post about TikTok video editing is that I want to get started with TikTok, but I want to go about it differently.
I’ll tell you later why I followed this approach of editing TikTok videos in a video editor, but first things first, let’s talk about the popularity and impact of this short-video platform.
TikTok has grown to a point where it is being recognized by every social media user out there. Despite the fact that not everyone wants to get on this platform to dance, lip-sync, or tell a joke, but still, the social media platform has found its place on the top shelf.

But it still is not as easy as it looks. Although, it has 800 million monthly active users, and the average daily time spent on the app is 52 minutes. All these numbers make it look very easy to break in and become TikTok famous. But that isn’t the case exactly. However, you never know what happens when you stand out from the crowd. That’s why I want to pitch the idea of uploading edited videos to TikTok. I know for sure that I’ll be uploading the edited videos to my TikTok account.

My younger brother has 9k followers on TikTok, and one of his TikTok videos got a million views and 46k likes. So it made me realize that the attention is there; all you need is the right recipe to grab it.
As I’m about to get on this platform, I decided to dig deeper into the TikTok secrets and found out a few key things that make your videos go viral on TikTok. I’ll share those key elements at the end of this blog post. Make sure to read till the end. I promise you that I’ll also be using the same tips and tricks to grow on TikTok.
Let’s find out how beginners can edit TikTok videos:
#1. Select the Video Editor
The first and foremost part of the TikTok video editing process is the selection of the video editing software. You might find your friends and TikTok influencers who don’t even use any video editing software to edit their TikTok videos. And that’s okay because if something is working for them, it may not necessarily work for you. Maybe, they lip-sync only or dance on the songs, which doesn’t require much of video editing.
On the other hand, you’d find TikTokers who use transitions and effects along with the music in their TikTok videos. Now this kind of stuff isn’t possible without a video editor. You’d also find TikTokers use some apps to edit videos for TikTok, but they seem to struggle with the limitations such as fewer numbers of effects, songs, and transitions.
I use Filmora9 for most of my video editing. Therefore, I’ll be using this video editor to edit my TikTok videos as well. I’ll give you a rundown on how you can edit videos for TikTok.

Once you’ve chosen the right video editor, it’ll be easy to navigate. What I like about the Filmora video editor is that it’s easy-to-use, affordable, and supports multiple video formats. I’ve used a couple of video editors other than Filmora, but I won’t recommend beginners to use those softwares for TikTok video editing. You can also optimize the Filmora video editor for smooth playback during video editing, which is why I like this software.
#2. Resolution and Aspect Ratio
Since TikTok videos are vertical so this app requires a 9:16 aspect ratio with 1080 x 1920 resolution. Don’t get confused about this. All you need is to make videos in vertical form instead of landscape. The story doesn’t end here; the aspect ratio also matters in editing the TikTok video.

You must set the aspect ratio and resolution in your video editing software. Since I’m a Filmora9 user so let me tell you how easy it is to set the resolution and aspect ratio in Filmora9.
Once you open the Filmora9, go to the File from the top menu, and select the project settings from the drop-down menu.
You can adjust the aspect ratio and resolution from there.
#3. Sound Effects and Music
Besides splitting and editing out the sections, sound effects and music play a vital role in any type of video editing. TikTok videos are no exception. Filmora9 doesn’t come up with a whole lot of sound effects and music files so we may have to rely on external sources to crank up a notch.
Here are some of the sources to get sound effects and video music for TikTok videos:
Moreover, you can type in search terms like “free music for YouTube” in Google and find a lot of music resources. Similarly, you can do some digging on SoundCloud and find a lot of musicians who put out free music on the platform. Make sure to reach out to them first and ask for permission to use their music.
Furthermore, I wrote a blog post on the best sources of free music for YouTube videos that you can check out as well.
Once you have a good soundtrack or a set of sound effects for your TikTok video, the next part is how well you use in the video editor. Read the next step for this.
#4. Spice it Up (with your creativity)
Spice it up mean add in your flavor, creativity, and personality to it. It could be the selection of a certain dialogue, music, or sound effects. One of the important things on TikTok is lip-syncing, which leads to other things such as acting, expressions, and dialogue delivery. People who have an incredible passion for dancing or acting do really well on TikTok because they predominantly channel their interest on the platform.
However, it doesn’t mean if you don’t have an interest in acting or singing or dancing, then you can’t succeed. You can do pretty much anything in a TikTok video that must be 15 seconds to 60 seconds long.
It all comes down to your creativity and originality on the platform. The more you’re able to entertain the audience, the higher the chance of your success.
5 Key Elements that Can Make You TikTok Famous
So somewhere at the start of this blog post, I told you that I’ll share some key elements that would help you succeed on TikTok. I’ve figured out this by following some influencers on TikTok. Let’s take a look at five key elements that can make you TikTok famous:
1. Type of TikTok Content
The type of TikTok content matters a lot in your video going viral on the platform. In western countries, I noticed that trends like dancing and magic videos work really well on TikTok. However, in Asian countries, I noticed that funny fails, dialogues, and joke-based videos dominate the platform. It’s essentially important to wisely choose the type of content you want to create for TikTok.
Switching your content type back and forth or keep changing the type of TikTok content on the same account might not be a great idea. However, testing out different types of content on different accounts could do wonders for you. The point is that find that rabbit hole that leads you somewhere good.
2. Consistency in the Content Theme
Consistency in the content theme means that you must stick to a specific niche in your TikTok content. This would be your chance to make a viral TikTok video and ultimately go once step further in becoming a sensation on the platform.
What this means is that if you make 5 comedy videos on TikTok, and suddenly start uploading dancing videos, then it might not make much of a difference. On the contrary, if you stick to keep uploading comedy videos, you might get there sooner or later. The reason is that you’re sticking to a specific niche, and no one knows which skit of yours blows up on TikTok.
That being said, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experiment with different kinds of TikTok content. You should certainly experiment on that but on different TikTok accounts.
3. Using the Original Sounds
I have been analyzing TikTok for the last two months. Therefore, I came to a few key elements that help succeed on the platform. One of those key elements is the original sound. If you put out an original sound, it means you’re adding value to the platform. The platform sees your profile as someone who contributes to user engagement, which would be respectable in the platform’s eye.
Almost every social media network wants people to put out original content that engages the audiences and keeps the users on the platform. So I’d highly recommend using the original sounds.
4. Putting Effort into Video Editing
Have you noticed that some popular videos on TikTok have enticing music, transitions, and effects? There is a reason why some videos go viral on TikTok.
Once you’ve figured out the type of content you want to create and start creating a specific type of TikTok, the next thing you might want to consider is having a top-notch video editing. If you can’t edit videos, hire a freelance video editor to do it, but put your effort, time, and money into editing TikTok videos. It does make a difference.
5. Collaboration and Engagement
If you’re a content creator or blogger, you’d agree that collaborations go a long way. You must try to build connections on TikTok. The best way to do this is to follow TikTokers in your niche or you enjoy watching, comment, and share their content. This way, some of them might reciprocate the favor, and that’s how a relationship begins.
Similarly, try to engage with other TikTokers in the comments as well as reply to almost every comment on your video. When there is an engagement in your videos, the platform starts to recommend your videos to more audiences. This is how a video’s reach increases, and ultimately it goes viral at some point.
Let’s Conclude
So editing a TikTok video might take some time, but it’s worth it.
If you have been uploading TikTok videos without much editing, then it’d be hard for you to go about a few extra steps before you put out a TikTok video.
My argument is that if you want to stand out from the crowd, you got to do things the majority of people aren’t doing. Undoubtedly, editing TikTok videos is one of them.
If you ever thought, how you can edit TikTok videos or what video editing software you should use for TikTok video editing, then now you have the answer.
